Having a Work/Life Balance is B.S.

Many women can't even get started on a project before they're interrupted.

Women are told by the media everyday that they need to have a work/life balance in order to “have it all.” There are so many articles about it, products sold to us to “help” us, and all kinds of life hacks we can learn to give us more time. More time at work. More time at home. More time with our kids. More. More. More. The problem is that this balance they’re trying to sell us doesn’t exist. Balance is bullshit, and it’s time that we acknowledge it. It’s driving us insane and making us feel like failures.

What we’re being sold is multi-tasking. How to do many things at once in order to do it all. However, studies show that multi-tasking actually reduces productivity by up to 40 percent! When your brain has to switch between tasks, it takes time for it to catch up, and it has to work to get back on track for each task. That’s why you often feel confused and slow when you switch rapidly between several projects. But what if there were a better way?

Our Lives Are Lived in Seasons

The truth is that our lives have seasons. Beautifully changing seasons when different things take priority. These seasons can last months or years. When we have babies and small children, that is the most important thing for new parents. While you can still have a career, and be damn good at your job, it’s time that those in leadership positions back off when it comes to asking for more time at work, working from home on weekends, and understand when your children are sick so you need to stay home.

Sometimes your career is the most important thing. You want to get ahead at work, there’s a big project that you’re working on, or you want to start our own business. This is when your family needs to be understanding that a short time of being uncomfortable and extra chipping in around the house will benefit everyone while you are working so hard. Open, honest conversations are the crux of getting what you need, not taking it all on for the sake of “having it all.”

Ready for Change?

That’s why my clients aren’t coached to do more in multiple areas. It’s important to figure out what’s important right now, and focus on improving that area of their life. Whether it’s family, career, or caring for themselves after a period of neglect, guilt about doing too little is never something that they’ll get from me. We assess the season, then bask in the beauty that it brings.
